Fall snowfall!

I just returned from a relaxing weekend in Leavenworth. On Saturday, Andrew and I woke up at a leisurely hour, had breakfast.. (including some Hawaiian Kona coffee we brought back with us which made us briefly wish we were still there!) After a nice breakfast complete with Andrew's scrambled eggs, we drove up Highway 2 to the Smithbrook trailhead. I wanted to hike to one of my favorite alpine lakes, Lake Valhalla--but we decided to take a different approach this time. Last year we'd hiked to Lake Valhalla via a PCT trail access at Steven's Pass at about the same time of year. This picture doesn't quite do the drive up the bumpy dirt road justice, but there were some absolutely breath-taking colour contrasts this weekend in the mountains.
Just a hint of things yet to come as we trudge up some forgiving switchbacks.

Find Sophie. Find Waldo. Find Rae.....what, you can't find Waldo?

A little outbreak of sun amongst some autumn-kissed foliage creates a perfect Kodak moment.

Sophie likes to catch balls of snow, and she's not quite sure why they disappear once she's 'caught' them. Andrew just likes to tease dog.
Can you tell the trail is getting snowy-er?
A view of Lake Valhalla from the trail descent

Andrew and Sophie at the lake...Can you tell someone's a bit cold?Getting a doggie treat for Sophie...Like my hat? I didn't bring one, but luckily my Mom has one stashed at the cabin. What would we do without our mothers?

And if you need any proof that winter is coming earlier this year, I'd like to point out that the picture on the left was taken same time, same place....last year. All you ski bums can let out a great big yippee if you so please.

Looks like a great hike. I can find Sophie, but neither Rae nor Waldo. :)
